To celebrate the finale of the German Speaking Contest for Students, the Goethe-Institut has invited the well-known Berlin band Käptn Peng & Die Tentakel von Delphi to give a live concert in Berlin on November 21, 2020, which will be streamed live via Facebook at the University of Hong Kong the same day at 6 pm Hong Kong time. With their DIY hip hop, surreal lyrics and partly self-built instruments, the five extravagant musicians promise an extraordinary performance that will inspire not only German-learning music fans but many others.

Since its establishment in 2012, Käptn Peng & Die Tentakel von Delphi has been considered, with their musical curiosity cabinet of brushes, pots, bicycle bells, concrete buckets, mumbling double basses and prepared guitars, the German hip hop band with the most dilapidated instruments and incomprehensible lyrics. Some synthesizer sounds were added in their 2017 released album "Das Nullte Kapitel", which gave the ailing charm of the band sound a "spacy" touch. As in their first album "Expedition ins O" (2013), band founder and singer Robert Gwisdek alias Käptn Peng - an actor by birth - and his brother Johannes Gwisdek alias Shaban continue to dedicate themselves to typical subjects such as madness, enlightenment or bizarre monsters in language-heavy, neurotic texts. Among other things, they took apart the circle number Pi, hunted with shaved hedgehogs in a crazy dream journey through mirror cabinets or swept mankind little by little from the marauding planet. But for the first time they also offered the classic theme of love. Of course it still did rumble neatly. In the EP It's is my life - Cyclops in a tractor beam, produced in 2019, Käptn Peng, Shaban and their 30 year old fellow musicians Moritz (guitar), Peter (percussion) and Boris (double bass) remained true to their reputation as a "wacky" alternative hip-hop band. All their records were produced under the band's own label Kreismusik.

Press Reviews:

"...the lyrics of Der Anfang ist nah can fortunately already be read on the Internet, otherwise memorizing them would be a task that is almost impossible to master. /.../ Peng's neurotic, riot-philosophical linguistic art, performed by this laconic, not at all rap-typical voice, plus Shaban's own sounds, and then the extravagant pictorial ideas with the recurring theme of the man speaking with his own consciousness, together make up such an idiosyncratic hip-hop variant that it hardly fits into the common dance floor playlist.“ (Jenni Zylka in: Zeit online, 11.4.2013)

"Captain Peng does not sail between the streams or against them with his Die Tentakel Von Delphi, but far away in other waters. And yet it seems inevitable that sooner or later this enthusiastic bunch will take to their hearts who on the one hand are going for German rap and on the other hand can make friends with Widek’s special humor. (Simon Langemann in: Laut.de-kritik, 12.4.2013)

The concert will be moderated by the German-Hong Kong DJ, producer and music director of the club Potato Head, Johnny Hiller.
