Did you know the book genre "wimmel book" has its origin in Germany? A wimmel book, also known by the German term “Wimmelbilderbuch”, or hidden picture book, is a wordless book featuring detailed imagery. This book genre is beloved by both parents and children all over the world. The first ever wimmel book is said to be “All Around My City” by the German Illustrator Ali Mitgutsch. The book, published in 1968, shows everyday scenes of life in a busy German city in rich and cartoonish details, and soon it became a household item in nearly every German family.
Ali Mitgutsch passed away on 10th January 2022 at the age of 86. In commemoration of Ali Mitgutsch, the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany, has curated a wonderful exhibition featuring wimmel books not only created by Ali Mitgutsch, but also by other artists around the world. We are happy to bring this exhibition to Hong Kong, and we hope Hong Kong audiences can enjoy the magical charm of wimmel books.
The exhibition is accompanied by a drawing workshop on 3rd July (Sunday). The workshop will be hosted by Hong Kong illustrator/writer Maoshan Connie. Children between 4 to 12 years old are welcome to join.
About Maoshan Connie:
Maoshan Connie graduated with a Master degree in Children’s Literature from the University of Cambridge. Her greatest passion and creative motives are, among others, Hong Kong’s history, everyday stories from our city, and the relationship between human beings and the nature.
