German Fairy Tales

Exhibition|Thematic Display | 01. - 30.11.2023

  • Goethe-Institut Hongkong Library, Hong Kong

Fairy tales are part of traditional folk oral tales, often told dramatically and passed down orally. The ancestor of fairy tales is believed to be the well-known ancient Greek "Aesop's Fables". But in a German context, do you know any of the German fairy tales?

The well-known "Grimm's Fairy Tales" is a fairy tale published by the German Brothers Grimm in 1812. The Grimm brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were well known about the German folk tales. The first book they published contains more than 200 fairy tales. Famous stories include "Cinderella", "The Frog Prince", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Rapunzel", "Sleeping Beauty", "Snow White", etc. Apart from creating famous fairy tales, the Brothers Grimm also wrote the German dictionary (Deutscher Wörterbuch).
In addition to the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, Hermann Hesse's fairy tales are also worth reading. Different from Grimm's classical fairy tales, Hesse has a modern look and is closer to life.
This November, the Goethe Library will exhibit all books and DVDs about German fairy tales. You are welcome to borrow them!
