Call for applications international scholarship Heidelberger Stückemarkt

Heidelberger Stückemarkt is a renowned German theatre festestival that focusses on the work of contemporary playwrights, taking place for ten days at the end of April and beginning of May.
Its core is the competition of six not yet produced plays by German speaking authors. They are awarded different prizes and a production for the opening of next year's edition of Heidelberger Stückemarkt.
The festival invites the most remarkable premiere productions of contemporary theatre texts to be performed on the stages of Theater Heidelberg. Annually the most prestigious German theatres from all major cities of the German theatre scene gather in Heidelberg to show their latest productions.
In addition to the domestiv program since 2011 Heidelberger Stückemarkt features an international program from one so called guest-country. The international program consists of three to four performances of remarkable theatre productions from the respective country as well as an international competition for dramatic texts from the guest-country. In 2025 the guest country is China.
Since 2018 Theater Heidelberg hosts a scholarship for 10 young theatre artists from German speaking countries during Heidelberger Stückemarkt to experience the whole festival, extend their professional network and enjoy a specially curated surrounding scholarship program.
In 2025 Theater und Orchester Heidelberg in cooperation with the Goethe-Institutes in Peking and Hong Kong as well as the Department of Culture and Education of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai and supported by Freundeskreis des Theaters & Orchesters Heidelberg will be inviting four young theatre artists from Mainland China and Hong Kong SAR from various branches of the field to become part of the international scholarship of Heidelberger Stückemarkt.
The international scholarship of Heidelberger Stückemarkt will be hosted from April 28th 2025, until May 4th 2025. Arrival and departure to and from Heidelberg will be one day prior respectively one day later. The program will be designed to give the scholarship holders an insight into contemporary German theatre by watching the invited performances from German speaking countries, attending workshops, meeting artists from the German theatre scene and their German speaking scholar-counterparts. The international scholars will also be attending the international program, including theatre performances, author's competition and the surrounding program with panels and workshops.
The cooperating partners will provide travel, transportation, accommodation and per diems for the scholars. Since the scholars will encounter various persons and it is not guaranteed that those will be speaking Chinese or that a translator will always be present, the attendees muse be able to speak English on a level corresponding to the B2 level of CERF guideline.
Applications by emerging theatre artists (also if currently in assistant-positions), such as directors, playwrights, stage designers, and costume designers should be written in English and consist of a motivational letter, a CV and samples of artistic works of the attendee.
