Carolin’s father Dieter has changed a lot over the past few years. After separating from his wife, Carolin’s mother, he swapped hiking boots for flip-flops and ever since has travelled to Thailand for a few weeks every year, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends – all of them over 60 and divorced. Her father explains that he has the best time of his life there. His daughter thinks: Oh God, is my father now a sex tourist? Is Dieter now one of those men who stroll through the streets of Bangkok with a beautiful young Thai girl on his arm? What is he doing there? Together, father and daughter travel to Thailand, where the director suddenly finds herself part of a new family, while Dieter is confronted with an entirely different concept of love. Slowly, Carolin realizes that there will be no straight answers to her many indignant questions.

Carolin Genreith’s third feature-length documentary Happy is a highly personal film about the relationship between a father and his daughter, but also a film about growing old, being happy and cultural differences

Carolin Genreith, who was born in 1984 in Aachen, Germany, studied TV producing and journalism in Berlin, worked in a repertory cinema and as an assistant director. Her debut film, Dancing with Bellies, won the audience prize at the Festival des Deutschen Films (Festival of German Film) in Ludwigshafen.
