One of the aims of the project “Starting them Young: Advancing Data Literacy for Girls in Indonesia” is the development of concepts for teaching information & data competence to female pupils in order to close the digital gender gap. Another objective of the project is aimed at education policy, namely to reintroduce the teaching of digital information competence in schools to the agenda.

The project is divided into several phases. In the first phase, educationalists come together in a workshop with 22 female pupils from 7 schools in Jakarta and Bandung to develop an understanding of how information competence can best be taught in the classroom to the target group of young girls. The results of the workshop will be presented in an education policy forum to representatives of governmental institutions, NGOs, journalists and an interested public. In the second phase the concepts are to be prepared as handouts and made available to teachers.

“Starting them Young: Advancing Data Literacy for Girls in Indonesia” is a joint project of Goethe-Institut Indonesien, the PASCH initiative, Open Data Labs Jakarta and the World Wide Web Foundation.
