Germany 2018, Dir: Caroline Link, 100 minutes, age recommendation (FSK): 6+

Ruhr Valley, Germany, 1972. Hans-Peter is a pudgy nine year-old growing up in the security of his family and fun-loving relatives. At first sight he might not be the most popular guy, but he has a talent for making others laugh. However, dark shadows soon loom over the boy’s everyday life as his once cheerful mum becomes more and more depressed after an operation. Hans-Peter’s father leaves him mostly in the care of his two grandmas, both of whom have big hearts and strong personalities. Their love and care make it possible for Hans-Peter to use his talent for comedy to heal his own wounds while also making people laugh along with him – a quality that helps him become one of the best-known German comedians – Hape Kerkeling. The film by Academy Award winner Caroline Link is based on Kerkeling's memoirs.

Enfant Terrible
Oliver Masucci as Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Still from the film Enfant Terrible.

Germany 2019/20, Dir: Oskar Roehler, 135 minutes, age recommendation (FSK): 16+

When 22-year-old Rainer Werner Fassbinder stormed the stage of the ‘Antitheater’ (Anti-Theatre) in Munich in 1967 and seized the theatre production without further ado, nobody thought that this brazen nobody would become one of the most significant post-war German filmmakers. His passionate and driven character swiftly attracts a bunch of dedicated admirers. As if he senses his limited life span, he almost frantically creates film after film.
Despite early setbacks, many of his films had their breakthrough at the most renowned films festivals, hailed and hated by audience, critics and fellow filmmakers.
His anger and his longing for love as well as his self-exploitation have made Rainer Werner Fassbinder the most memorable and radical German film director, an Enfant Terrible. The film presents director Oskar Roehler's view on Fassbinder, aesthetically adapted to Fassbinder's universe.
