Exhibition African Women in Photography

African Women in Photography © Thandiwe Muriu

Thursday, 26th October 2023 - Friday, 10th November 2023

Auditorium

The photography exhibition celebrates the unique perspectives of East African women photographers on womanhood.

The exhibition "Sisi ni Hao" celebrates the unique perspectives of 13 East African women photographers on womanhood. It will showcase a range of photographic works that explore the complex and diverse experiences of women through the lens of the photographers. The works will range from portraits to documentary photography, with each photographer using their lens to capture the essence of African womanhood in their own unique way exploring the interplay between themes like empowerment and fragility, identity and representation, power and agency and tradition and modernity.

In addition to the contemporary works, the exhibition will also feature archival images of East African women taken by colonial photographers sourced from the Kenya National Archives. By placing these images alongside contemporary works, the exhibition provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on how the portrayal of East African women has evolved over time.

Through this exhibition, we hope to spark important conversations about the role of photography in shaping cultural narratives and to celebrate the unique perspectives of contemporary East African women photographers.
