Film Festival Science Film Festival 2017

Film Festival (c) Goethe-Institut Thailand

Monday, 23.10.2017 until Friday, 24.11.2017

In 2017, the Science Film Festival takes place for the first time in South Asia. For Sri Lanka it is the right moment to take part due to the reason that the theme of the Science Film Festival 2017 “Anthropocene - Welcome to the Human Age” has a great impact on the island. In particular climate change and garbage dumping are social challenges that Sri Lanka faces. In the last months Sri Lanka suffered from droughts in the north and floods in the south. In addition, the non-availability of garbage or solid-waste recycling facilities in Sri Lanka is a big problem. More than half of the plastic waste that flows into the oceans comes from just five countries: China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. This created serious issues relating to health, environment and wildlife.

The Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka wants to encourage the discussion of these topics with the Science Film Festival in schools, universities and vocational training centers to reach the young generation, the decision makers of the future. The Science Film Festival in Sri Lanka is supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research, the Ministries of Education and of Higher Education as well as by the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training. On October 23, 2017, the opening ceremony will be held at the Goethe-Institut in Colombo. Afterwards, the Festival will be spread out for one month island wide.
