The position of women in society is an omnipresent and relevant theme despite our just in our transitioning world. In the screened films, the female protagonists face challenges in different countries, living conditions and historical contexts and demonstrate their strength.

The 16-year-old Chandani from Sri Lanka for example, who wants to become the first female elephant leader in the film “Chandani and her elephant”. Or the Berlin doctor in “Barbara” who has to work under observation in a provincial hospital in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) or in “Four Minutes” the exciting relationship between the piano teacher Traude Krüger and Jenny, an inmate of the women’s prison.
