2026|Dreaming New Worlds

This seminar will introduce participants to data storytelling best practices, including deciding which insights to visualize, selecting the most effective data visualization techniques (when and how to use different data viz options for maximum clarity and impact), tooling options, and helpful open data resources. This seminar will be complemented with an interactive hands-on workshop with Daladala verse on collecting, verifying, analyzing, and presenting spatial data for their project.

Hannah Kates is a civic technology and data product leader with over a decade of experience delivering data-driven solutions in Africa, Asia, and the United States. Prior to founding Public Tech Studio, she served as Head of Product at Stears (Pan-African data intelligence company) and then started Stears Open Data, the company's non-profit initiative. Before moving to Nigeria, she worked in government at the New York City Department of City Planning, where she advised on capital investment strategy and led analytics and software initiatives, managing a portfolio of 10+ public data products. Her career began in infrastructure master planning after earning a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Georgia Tech. She holds a Master of Urban Planning from New York University with a focus on data analytics and international development.
