Schmerz Camp is a moving story about self-discovery, community and the power to draw new strength from difficult experiences.
Seven women in a renowned, surreal pain clinic: caught in an endless cycle of therapies and consultations with the doctors, the patients try out medication, do pottery, meditate and exercise — yet the pain remains. On the surface, nothing seems to be happening to the women in the clinic, and yet everything is in a state of constant, subtle flux. Time passes differently here. The ageing, femininised body is a central motif.
The language and dialogue are based on real conversations and clinic questionnaires — enriched by choral passages, poetry and performative images of nature that open up a new dimension: where do we find comfort, and what might a path through the pain look like?
17% of Germany's population suffer from chronic pain; 80% of those affected are women. Schmerz Camp is a plea for genuine listening, for greater mindfulness and for a community based on solidarity. Patty Kim Hamilton seeks out the everyday, the humour, the tenderness and the simplicity that lie before the dark abyss, and in doing so finds a masterful way of expressing something that is almost impossible to put into words.

Patty Kim Hamilton
Playwright, dramaturg, performance artist, director
Patty Kim Hamilton writes, teaches and works with theatre. Her work lies at the intersection of the personal and the political. Peeling Oranges won the Heidelberger Stückemarkt Radio Play Prize, the Nancy Dean Lesbian Theatre Award and the Jane Chambers Award for Feminist Drama, amongst others. Schmerz Camp was produced at the Theater Bremen and published as part of the Suhrkamp Theatre Series. Re: Jane Doe was honoured as part of the RSC’s 37 Plays initiative. Patty studied at Stanford University and the Berlin University of the Arts and was a resident playwright at Deutsches Theater Berlin. She is currently working on her debut novel and has been living in Saxony-Anhalt for several years.

Sarah* Claire Wray is a director and theatre maker, best known for their sensitive and body-oriented productions. Their work lies at the intersection of drama, performance and music, and frequently explores themes such as identity, bodily experience and social structures.
They work internationally at theatres and independent production companies, developing both their own projects and productions of contemporary drama. They place great emphasis on collaborative processes and close collaboration with performers.
