Bookclub meeting in March
Buchclub|This month's spotlight: "Paradise City"
-
The Undercurrent, Wellington
- Language German
- Part of series: Frauen Lesen Book Club
“Frauen lesen” is a monthly book club focused on literature by female authors. Together, participants read and discuss texts from various genres and time periods. The aim is to highlight female perspectives in literature and create a space for meaningful exchange.
In March, we’re reading: Paradise City by Zoë Beck.
Germany in the future. The coasts are flooded, large parts of the country have been depopulated, and nature is reclaiming abandoned towns. Berlin is now nothing more than a backdrop for tourists. The seat of government is Frankfurt, which has merged with the entire Rhine-Main region to form a single megacity. Wherever infrastructure still exists, it works flawlessly. Nearly all aspects of life are controlled by algorithms. Everyone is doing well — as long as they don’t ask questions.
Liina, a researcher for one of the last non‑state news portals, is sent to the Uckermark to verify what she believes is a completely trivial report. In fact, she was supposed to take over a highly explosive story. While she reluctantly carries out her assignment, her boss has a very strange accident that nearly costs him his life, and a colleague is murdered. Both had been working on the story that Liina had been promised. At first, she thinks it’s about covering up a project run by the Ministry of Health, but then she uncovers a horrifying truth: someone very close to her has the power to decide over the life and death of almost everyone in the country. And that power is now slipping out of control …
Important Information:
The books will be read in German, and discussions will also take place in German. A language level of at least C1 is required.
By the way, the books are usually also available as e-books, audiobooks, or through our Onleihe library.
Interested in joining? Send us a quick email to info.wellington@goethe.de to express your interest! We’ll keep you informed about future reading cycles and let you know when new spots open up — so you won’t miss a chance to be part of Frauen lesen.
We’d love to hear from you!
