German Immersion Days 2024
From 10 to 12 May 2024, a very special annual event took place at the Goethe-Institut in Wellington: The German Immersion Days.
Twelve students from all over Aotearoa New Zealand, from the cities of Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, Ashburton, and Hamilton took part in this weekend, which was all about the German language and culture. Many motivated German learners had applied, and the weekend offered a variety of activities that excited all participants. The programme included creative craft workshops, such as making friendship bracelets at the institute, fun games, and musical interludes as well as a scavenger hunt. These activities ensured a lot of fun and helped to forge new friendships. A special highlight was the preparation and “Abendbrot” together at the Goethe-Institut. The participants were able to enjoy traditional German specialties such as Obazda and Schwarzwälderkirschtorte, which rounded off the cultural experience. The grand finale was a mini-Oktoberfest, which created an exuberant atmosphere. The teenagers also appreciated the fact that German was spoken throughout the weekend which enabled everyone to improve their language skills.
The German Immersion Days 2024 were a complete success for us and offered everyone an unforgettable experience. We would like to thank everyone involved for their enthusiasm and commitment and we are already looking forward to many more German Immersion Days in the future.
Thank you very much for running the Wellington Immersion Scholarship. It was the best weekend of my life, hands down, and I have come back with a reignited passion for German culture and language. Not only that, I have noticed my German has improved and my teacher commented that I was far more confident and open to speak it. Also, with that, thank you for picking such an amazing group. We all got along so well, and everyone had an awesome sense of humor. I feel that I have made lifelong friends. Thank you, Goethe-Institut, for this amazing opportunity!
