Six young composers from different countries in Southeast Asia will converge in Manila for a week-long workshop and competition on contemporary music-making.

A project of the Goethe-Institut Philippinen and the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Music, this Southeast Asian Composers Lab aims to create performance and learning opportunities for young composers in the region. More importantly, the project also strives to build a community of contemporary composers and musicians in the region en route to the creation of that brand of modern artistic works that speak of the local and everyday experiences.

The workshop facilitators are composed themselves of leading contemporary composers in Southeast Asia, namely Mr. Michael Asmara (Indonesia), Mr. Chong Kee Yong (Malaysia), Ms. Anothai Nitibhon (Thailand), Hoh Chung Shih (Singapore), Ms. Kim Ngoc Tran (Vietnam) and Dr. Jonas Baes (Philippines).

Joining the names above for workshop in Manila is German composer Dr. Johannes Schöllhorn of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Cologne University of Music and Dance), the largest academy of music in Europe.

The workshop will culminate with performances in selected venues and the awarding of a seed grant to the best young composer.
