Open Call: Digital Translation Academy

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Digital Translation Academy, a project by the Goethe-Institut South Asia. This initiative aims to promote literary translation in the South Asian region, strengthen the professional connections between literary translators, and support their work.

We are inviting applications from upcoming literary translators who wish to hone their translation skills within the framework of this project, which will commence online in May 2023. The source language of translation is German, and works will be translated into Bangla, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, and Sinhalese.

The deadline for submission is March 25, 2023

To apply for this program, interested candidates must submit translations of two texts and one poem (all available on our website), along with a letter of motivation (3 lines) and a CV (5 lines). The text excerpts can be found as pdf file on the
website of the programme.

All files should be submitted in pdf format, and each file must be marked with the last name of the translator and the type of document. For instance, "Sayali_Resume.pdf," "Sayali_Marathi.pdf," or "Sayali_Motivation letter.pdf." Please make sure to mention the target language in the email subject.

The deadline for submission is March 25, 2023. An independent jury will review the translation samples and select three candidates per language to participate in the Academy by 25 April 2023.

Selected translators are required to attend all sessions, lectures, and presentations of the Translation Workshop.

There will be four online workshops with mentors and experts - texts to be translated will be shared in advance for preparation for the workshops. The experts will provide a reading list for discussions in the forum. These activities will take place during May -December 2023. In addition, there will be 6 lectures by translation experts from Germany and South Asia.

More details will be shared with the selected candidates.

The virtual literary translation academy will cover the entire spectrum of literary translation. It includes a lecture series with established literary translators from South Asia and Germany, genre-oriented intensive workshops with mentors, and a general networking and exchange platform for specialist information on the subject of translation.

We encourage you to participate in this exciting project and look forward to receiving your application.
