German Film Festival x KinoFest 2025

One of Singapore’s longest-running foreign film festivals returns this year with a compelling selection that celebrates the diversity and dynamism of contemporary German cinema. The 28th edition of the German Film Festival invites you on a cinematic journey that explores the complexities of identity, memory, and transformation. Our carefully curated programme offers films that grapple with tensions between past and present—like Two to One, where a communist neighbourhood on the brink of capitalism hatches a brilliant money-making scheme. Or Perla, a film about a dissident artist living in 1980s Vienna who returns to communist Czechoslovakia, reopening the wounds and loves of a difficult past.

In Riefenstahl, director Andres Veiel and producer Sandra Maischberger turn their lens on one of cinema’s most controversial figures. This powerful documentary confronts the legacy of filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, raising urgent questions about art, propaganda, and complicity.

We also present films that navigate perception and prejudice—occasionally making light of them, and in other cases, descending into madness—like in Old White Man and Hysteria. And finally, we present films that plumb the depths of human adversity, to reveal an underbelly that is sometimes triumphant and sometimes less so, like with Köln 75, From Hilde, with Love, How to be Normal and The Oddness of the Other World, and Late Shift.

All manner of cinema speaks of encounter, transporting us preciously—and sometimes precariously, through the loves, worlds, and eyes of others. We invite you to have an encounter with us.

Köln 75 © Alamode Film Distribution

Köln 75

Köln 75 tells the rousing and true story of the rebellious 18-year-old Vera Brandes, who risks everything to organise a concert for Keith Jarrett, which goes on to become one of the best-selling jazz records of all time.

Riefenstahl ©Vincent Productions

Riefenstahl

Considered to be one of the most controversial women of the 20th Century, Leni Riefenstahl is the artist and filmmaker behind famous Nazi propaganda films Triumph of the Will and Olympia. The documentary explores Riefenstahl’s legacy and complex ties to the regime, juxtaposing her aesthetics, self-portrayal, and biography, to the backdrop of atrocity.

Two to One © Filmcoopi

Two to One

It’s the summer after the fall of the Berlin Wall. A communist family in Halberstadt discovers a bunker full of East German marks, which will soon be worthless. With the help of their neighbours, they embark on a race against time to enter the capitalist world in style.

From Hilde, with Love © Pandora Film Verleih

From Hilde, with Love

Berlin, 1942: it’s an idyllic summer for young Hilde—in love and joyously pregnant. But amid the passion there is grave danger. She becomes involved with the anti-Nazi resistance, and soon finds herself fighting for her future, and that of her unborn child.

How to be Normal © Golden Girls Film

How to be Normal and the Oddness of the Other World

Fresh out of a psychiatric hospital, Pia moves back in with her parents to get her life back together. Torn between a new job, lovesickness, psychotropic drugs, and social stigmas, she emerges into a world where everything seems out of control.

Woodwalkers © Studiocanal

Woodwalkers

Carag is not a typical 13-year-old: he happens to be able to shapeshift into a puma. He joins Clearwater High, a school for Woodwalkers, where together with his new friends Brandon (a shy bison) and Holly (a cheeky squirrel), they must learn to navigate the mysteries and dangers of the Woodwalker world.

Perla © Golden Girls Filmproduktion

Perla

Perla is an exiled single mother and artist living in 1980s Vienna. When her former partner comes back into their lives after being released from prison, she makes the perilous journey back to communist Czechoslovakia. Torn between the past and present, Perla finds herself spiralling into a future that threatens her newly-formed family. This film is co-presented with the Austrian Embassy Singapore.

Late Shift © Zodiac Pictures

Late Shift

Floria is a dedicated nurse who serves tirelessly in an understaffed hospital ward. She has an open ear for patients, even in the most stressful situations, and is immediately on hand in an emergency—ideally. But when she starts her late shift one day, her work gradually becomes an urgent race against the clock. This film is co-presented with the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore.

Old White Man © Constantin Film

Old White Man

We live in sensitive times. Heinz Heimlich is the epitome of an old white man—a politically rigid, middle-aged executive—who must host a dinner in order to secure a promotion. But things go awry as façades slip, and the occasion descends into politically incorrect chaos.

Hysteria © Real Fiction Filmverleih

Hysteria

The filming of a burned Quran throws a film crew into turmoil. The footage goes missing, and second assistant director Elif finds herself caught in a tangled web of accusations, paranoia, and prejudice, as the enthralling whodunit builds.

In the Fade © Warner Bros. Pictures

In the Fade

Katja’s life falls apart in the blink of an eye when a bomb blast by two neo-Nazis takes the lives of her husband and 6-year-old son. Consumed by grief and anger, she decides to take justice into her own hands.

Niko: Beyond the Northern Lights © 2024 Anima Vitae, Cinemaker, Ulysses Films, Moetion Films, A. Film Production

Niko: Beyond the Northern Lights

Christmas is on the horizon, and it looks like it’s going to be the best one yet for Niko the reindeer, whose biggest dream is to become a member of Santa’s flying forces. But then a new challenger appears, and worse, Santa’s sleigh is stolen. Now it’s up to Niko and his friends to venture into the frozen North on a daring mission to save the holidays.

Lessons of a Dream © Senator Film Verleih

Lessons of a Dream

In 1874 Germany, an Oxford-educated instructor uses football to teach vocabulary to his pupils, upsetting his conservative colleagues, the students’ parents, and local dignitaries in the process. Loosely-based on the life of late-19-Century football pioneer Konrad Koch.
