Scattered Memories
In 2024 we embarked on a journey of “Scattered Memories”, expanding on meaning and collecting intangible forms of heritage, unheard narratives and stories. Now we bring this immersive experience to a live audience, as we set to reflect with all the scenes, on moments engraved in people's bodies and memories.
The Goethe-Institut Sudan invites you to the “Scattered Memories” exhibition, in partnership with Humboldt Forum Berlin. This transnational exhibition will launch in Cairo and showcase artistic contributions from diverse Sudanese artists across the region, with their reflections on cultural losses and the collective memory, due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. After two years of collection, discussion and creation, the “Scattered Memories” Exhibition, in partnership with the Humboldt Forum Berlin, is embarking on a regional journey. Beginning in the heart of Cairo, through visuals, sounds, scents and flavors, the exhibition, from May 1 – 3, 2026 offers a unique 3-day multimedia experience that dares to artistically and experimentally reflect on cultural losses and the act of collective memory, while deepening the understanding of how memories are shaped across different contexts and spaces. Welcoming audiences from all walks of life, the exhibition includes collage art, films, music, food demonstrations, videos, articles, photography, storytelling, caricature, and theatre, all of which beautifully reveal a culture of remembrance.
“Scattered Memories” provides a local and regional platform for the Sudanese artists to showcase their work and connect on a holistic level with the public. In addition, the events include interactive elements such as talks, panel discussions, a traditional coffee corner and guided tours. Following its launch, it will continue to flow across the continent into Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Kampala, Luanda and coming to a close, in Berlin by 2027.
