"As winter's chill draws near, it prompts us to reflect on the myriad emotions this cold weather can evoke. It can summon memories of joyful and festive occasions, or it can transport us back to the quiet and lonely days. Throughout European Romantic poetry, the sentiment of the latter are often explored. At the pinnacle of music and literary canon, Schubert’s “Winterreise”, can be cited as an epitome of its kind.
With a cold and lonely winter in the background, this remarkable song cycle takes us on a journey with its wanderer protagonist. In this composition, we find the convergence of two enduring motifs that are prevalent in poetic literature: winter and wanderer, which are often accentuated by another pair of themes: unrequited love and obsession.
Join us in Musikgespräch Episode 4, where Dr. Thanapol Setabrahmana and Mr. Kittiphol Saragganonda will guide you through a captivating discussion on these timeless motifs that have left their mark across 19th-century German poems and lieder. With Schubert's ""Winterreise"" at the core of the conversation, our hosts will unravel the rich history of love and obsession, the significance of winter and the wanderer, the context of German Romanticism, and the lineage of love songs related to our central themes. The event will also be enriched by a live performance of selected songs from the cycle, to be performed by Waku Nakazawa (tenor) and Rasikamon Siyapong (piano).
