The novel about a piece of Vietnam in Germany is presented in Vietnamese

Library of General Sciences Ho Chi Minh City

In the beginning it’s just an old Vietnamese wooden puppet that fascinates the children and teachers of an elementary school in Berlin on stage. Step by step, the residents of the urban district discover that a lot of Vietnam can be found in the neighborhood – and Sung’s store becomes a popular meeting point, where not only conical hats, silk and vegetables from Vietnam suddenly sell like hot cakes but also people from Berlin approach their Vietnamese neighbors. The urban quarter is changing, up to the point of a Vietnamese water puppet theater in a duck pond in the heart of Berlin!

In the humorous and touching story by Karin Kalisa the destinies of former Vietnamese contract workers meet the stories of prior citizens of the GDR.

Karin Kalisa was born in 1965 in Bremerhaven. She achieved her PhD in Japanese Studies and philosophy of language and studied in Hamburg, Bochum and Tokio. After occupation at different research institutions like Max-Planck-Institut or the International Research Center for Cultural Studies, she wrote her first novel “Sung’s store” (original title “Sungs Laden”).
