The workshops utilize a variety of media such as film, live performance, lighting and dialogue to keep the attention and interest of the participants. Our intention is to broaden the participants’ realm of experience by showcasing South African musical heritage in a way that is both informative, inclusive, and fun.
Participants will be given an opportunity to perform, ask questions and respond to the experience. A foundational principle that underpins the workshops is that experience facilitates knowing. We explore the sounds of isitorotoro, umakheweyana bow, and the penny whistle to recall music of the past and to inspire music of the future.
Participants will be invited to reflect on why we make music, and how music experienced here makes them feel. They will learn about the technical skills that are needed to stage musical performances.
