GOETHE-INSTITUT SOUTH AFRICA
As of 15 May 2020Welcome to the Goethe-Institut. We are very happy to see you!
We would like you to feel comfortable and safe – and are therefore briefly informing you about some of our etiquettes and code of conduct for treating each other.
Who we are
The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany, which is active all around the world. Our aim is to promote knowledge of the German language abroad and to cultivate international cultural cooperation. In addition, we strive to convey a comprehensive picture of Germany through information about the cultural, social and political life in Germany. We have been operating in South Africa since 1995.
How we work
We represent democratic values which are characterized by respect, openness and tolerance. In our work, and in our rooms & spaces, no one is discriminated against on the basis of religion, origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation or any other reason. We value freedom of expression, even if we do not always share the same opinion.
How we treat each other
In our dealings with one another, with our customers and our partners, we let ourselves be guided by these same values. The protection of personal rights is important to us.
In our rooms & spaces, and during our events:
- one can discuss openly and peacefully
- it is not allowed to carry a weapon
- it is not permitted to smoke, this includes electric/electronic cigarettes or vaporisers/vape/e-vape
- physical confrontations or assaults will not be tolerated
We expect our visitors and our staff to treat the classrooms and the inventory on the premises with care: Please leave the rooms and spaces in the condition you would like to find them yourself!
For your and our safety
We are an open institute and would like to remain open! In order to guarantee your security and that of our premises, we have installed video surveillance:
Cameras have been installed in all the places which can be visited by the general public, including the new building (reception, corridors, library) and the outdoor areas (parking and around the entire building). There are no security cameras in the old building, in the classrooms or in the rooms which can be booked (seminar room, auditorium). The video recordings can only be used internally.
Data Protection Regulations and Declarations of Consent
We will be treating the personal data of our customers and our partners lawfully and sparingly.
The Goethe-Institut e.V., Oskar-von-Miller-Ring 18, 80333 Munich, as the operator of the websites www.goethe.de and www.goethe.de/joburg, is the responsible body regarding the personal data of users in the sense of the German Data Protection laws, in particular the Federal Data Protection Act, as well as the service provider in the sense of the Telemedia Act.

In order to be able to use this website, the so-called Conditions of Use will apply in the relationship between the “User” and the Goethe-Institut.
In order to be able to register on the website, the “User” needs to accept these Conditions of Use. The contractual object will be the free use of the website as a platform for information and communication.

CONDITIONS OF USE
Participation in our language courses
We are offering language courses for adults, young people and children.
To assist you, we have compiled information about the enrolment, a level assessment, payment and other questions regarding the language courses.
It could happen that you can no longer take part in a course you have booked and that you need to cancel your booking. We have, therefore, formulated valid terms of cancellation for everyone.

Participation in courses for young people and children
The same conditions as above apply for the courses for young people and children. However, children and young people are particularly in need of protection. It is, therefore, in their case, even more important to ensure that the house rules are complied with at all times.
Participation in our exams
The exams we offer for young people and adults are recognized all around the world. Equally, our exam rules and procedures are applied all over the world in order to ensure the high and reliable standard of the exams.

Use of our “Library - Gamebox – Hub”
We would like to invite you to use our library, the gamebox, the hub and the digital “eLibrary”. There are some rules which you should know about.

CONDITIONS OF USE
The Goethe-Institut Johannesburg is a place of encounter and cultural dialogue. Events take place on a regular basis, and we would like to invite you to come and exchange ideas, inform yourself and get to know all the different disciplines of our cultural offers.
The house rules will also apply to events taking place at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. The current overview of events can be found here:
