Description

Inquiry Overview:

This inquiry focuses on events in divided Germany and throughout Europe in the period following World War II until the reunification of Germany on October 3, 1990. Using a familar example from their own country's history, students will discuss the concept of a "turning point." Students will read a speech by Winston Churchill and analyze how a single event can signify a major historical shift. Students will then review a chronology of the Cold War era with a focus on those events relevant to the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG, West Germany). Students will create a timeline and be able to describ 10 events that they believe signaled change in Germany during the Cold War era.
