Emil Tischbein, a 12-year-old boy, lives with his single father in a small East German town. He is overjoyed when his father finally finds a job as a vacuum cleaner salesman after a long period of unemployment. Now a new life begins! But then Mr. Tischbein has a car accident and loses his driver's license. Mr. Tischbein is hospitalized and Emil goes to Berlin for two weeks. On the train to Berlin, Emil meets the petty criminal Max Grundeis. He tells the boy that he can help him get a new driver's license for his dad. When Emil begins to trust Grundeis,
he steals 1500 marks, Emil's entire savings.
