The film tells the story of Lara, who grows up as the daughter of deaf parents in a small town in southern Germany. Lara herself hears normally and knows sign language, which is why she translates for her parents in many situations from a young age. For example, she accompanies them to the bank for loan negotiations and also interprets at the parents' meeting at school, although not always very truthfully.
At Christmas, Lara receives a clarinet from her aunt Clarissa, who is an enthusiastic musician. Lara discovers the world of music, which, for her parents, is out of reach. During the following years, Lara develops into a talented clarinetist.
After Lara's mother Kai dies after a bicycle accident, Lara's father Martin feels abandoned. When the now 18-year-old Lara wants to study at a conservatory (music academy) in Berlin, the family seems to break apart. The ending, however, seems reconciliatory: Lara's father tries to understand his daughter's love of music, and there is a cautious second chance between Martin and Lara.
