In the third episode of "Comfort Food Stories," Rahel meets Tadeu from Brazil. Together, they bake "Bolo de Cenoura," a carrot cake with chocolate icing. Even though moving to Germany was Tadeu's dream, he found it difficult to get started – especially because of the language barrier at work and the dreaded German bureaucracy.
Tadeus's grandmother's recipe:
For the dough:- 270 g carrots (peeled)
- 200 ml sunflower oil
- 3 eggs
- 360 g sugar
- 240 g wheat flour
- 15 g baking powder
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 5 tablespoons milk
- 180 g sugar
- Chocolate sprinkles
- Blend the carrots, oil and eggs in a blender for approx. 5 minutes until smooth.
- Mix the flour, sugar and baking powder in a bowl.
- Add the carrot mixture and stir (do not blend).
- Pour the dough into a greased, floured rectangular baking tin.
- Bake in the oven at 180°C for approx. 40 minutes.
- Melt the butter, cocoa, milk and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat until the sugar is melted.
- Prick the still-warm cake with a fork, pour the glaze evenly over it and decorate with chocolate sprinkles.
