In the third episode of "Comfort Food Stories," Rahel meets Tadeu from Brazil. Together, they bake "Bolo de Cenoura," a carrot cake with chocolate icing. Even though moving to Germany was Tadeu's dream, he found it difficult to get started – especially because of the language barrier at work and the dreaded German bureaucracy.

Tadeus's grandmother's recipe:

For the dough:
  • 270 g carrots (peeled)
  • 200 ml sunflower oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 360 g sugar
  • 240 g wheat flour
  • 15 g baking powder
For the glaze:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 5 tablespoons milk
  • 180 g sugar
  • Chocolate sprinkles
Preparation:
  • Blend the carrots, oil and eggs in a blender for approx. 5 minutes until smooth.
  • Mix the flour, sugar and baking powder in a bowl.
  • Add the carrot mixture and stir (do not blend).
  • Pour the dough into a greased, floured rectangular baking tin.
  • Bake in the oven at 180°C for approx. 40 minutes.
For the glaze:
  • Melt the butter, cocoa, milk and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat until the sugar is melted.
  • Prick the still-warm cake with a fork, pour the glaze evenly over it and decorate with chocolate sprinkles.
