Feras Fayyad in Conversation

The internationally acclaimed Syrian documentary filmmaker, director, producer, and screenwriter Feras Fayyad gained global recognition with his Oscar-nominated documentaries Last Men in Aleppo (2017) and The Cave (2019). In these powerful works, he vividly portrays how Syrians defy the relentless terror of the Assad regime. Fayyad himself was brutally tortured in Syrian prisons. Despite fleeing the country, he returned in secret to document the atrocities on film. He later became the first person in the world to testify in a German court about the crimes committed in notorious detention centers such as Al-Khatib in Damascus.

In conversation with Ruben Domsbach, Fayyad offers a deeply personal perspective on Syria after Assad—addressing questions of justice, accountability, and the role of art in resisting oblivion.
The event will also include excerpts from his film The Cave (2019).

 

Panelists

  • Feras Fayyad

    Feras Fayyad is a Syrian documentary filmmaker. He was born in 1988 near Idlib and has received numerous awards for his work, including the German Documentary Film Award and an Emmy.
     

  • Ruben Donsbach

    Ruben Donsbach, born in 1981 in Bremerhaven, studied literature and journalism in Berlin and Paris. He was a Berliner Festspiele young authors award winner and has worked as an editor for ZEITmagazin Online and as editor-in-chief at Fräulein magazine. His texts and interviews have appeared in the newspapers including Berliner Zeitung and the taz. He joined KULTURAUSTAUSCH as editor in May 2022.
