Cosmoperceptions of the Forest

The articles in this special issue form part of the “Cosmoperceptions of the Forest” project. This project encourages people to view forests as not only a natural space, but also a cultural and spiritual place. It sheds light on how different communities, especially indigenous ones, perceive, use and connect with the forest. It brings together scientific research, artistic forms of expression and traditional knowledge. The aim is to visualise the forest’s diverse meanings, from its history and ecological role to its cosmic and symbolic dimensions.

Project Cosmoperceptions of the forest

With five residencies in South America and Europe, the initiative focuses on traditional territories, mapping the environmental history of forests and highlighting their scientific and cosmological connections. The project combines traditional knowledge, scientific methods, artistic practices and indigenous perspectives. The results of these encounters will be shown in 2025 at the COP30 in Belém and the Amazon Biennial.

Environmental Planning Indigenous Alternatives for a more Sustainable Post-Pandemic World

Investors and trade agreements play a significant role in dictating what people  produce, cultivate, extract, manufacture and, on the other hand, what is protected. Where such substantial decisions are made, Indigenous socio-philosophies, ecological knowledge and values need to be included to a much greater extent.
