For the 38th Kaldor Public Art Project, John Kaldor has invited German artist Thomas Demand to create an extraordinary exhibition space in the Art Gallery of NSW’ Naala Badu building, specifically designed to display the John Kaldor Family Collection in a whole new light.

The collaborative relationship between John Kaldor and Thomas Demand goes back to 2012, when they presented a ground-breaking public art installation at the Commercial Travellers’ Association in Sydney’s Martin Place.

Demand, known for his photographs, has developed an interest in architecture and exhibition design. For this project, he focuses on the Kaldor Collection and the Art Gallery’s SANAA-designed building, informed by his visits to the architecture firm’s studio in Tokyo. His spatial design transforms the gallery into a labyrinth of floating, coloured planes and pavilions, offering a new experience of the gallery space and its art.

The exhibition features key selections from the Kaldor Collection, including works by world-renowned German artists Bernd Becher and Hilla Becher, Andreas Gursky, Gregor Schneider, Thomas Struth and Thomas Demand himself, as well as international artists such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Gilbert and George, Sol LeWitt and Robert Rauschenberg.
