As part of the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, the world premiere of the latest restoration of THIS ANCIENT LAW took place on February 16th, 2018 in the Friedrichstadt-Palast, with live music by Philippe Schoeller. It was the prelude to a cultural project drawing attention to Eastern Europe’s vital Jewish culture at the beginning of the 20th century and - with its range of restored films, contemporary music, literary readings, and panel discussions - unites almost 100 years of cultural history.

THIS ANCIENT LAW is one of the classics of Weimar cinema: in the mid-19th century, Baruch, the son of a rabbi, wants to become an actor. Against his father's will, he leaves the Eastern European shtetl where he grew up and joins a travelling theatre.
