Lionhearted

Germany, 2019, 90 minutes / Director: Antje Drinnenberg

Burak, Saskia and Raschad are three of boxing coach Ali Cukur's protégés. Every week, they meet with other young boxers in a small gym at TSV 1860 Munich. Most of them have been through a lot in life. For them, Ali is a role model, a father, a lifesaver. In the boxing ring, he teaches them to tame their anger, to keep control: Boxing as training for real life. The chance to find recognition and not choose the wrong path.
Ali moves the annual boxing camp to Ghana. Confronted with the harsh conditions of Ghanaian boxers in the slums of Accra, the young people begin to look at their lives in Germany from a new perspective. Thus, the trip to West Africa becomes a journey to themselves - to their fears, their inner conflicts, but also to their strength and self-esteem.
