Exhibition and Book Launch

Welcome to the "AfriComics" Exhibition, a vibrant showcase of African comic art that transcends borders and narratives to present a unique exploration of the theme "Decolonize...!" This exhibition, a culmination of the collaborative efforts between artists across Africa and the Goethe-Institut Ghana, illuminates the rich tapestry of storytelling that the African continent offers. As we gather in this space, we stand on the precipice of an immersive journey into the realms of imagination, history, and shared futures.

The "AfriComics" project, initiated in 2020, was born out of a vision to create a pan-African network of comic artists, providing a platform for interaction, mutual support, and international networking. Our journey through the exhibition will introduce you to the works of seventeen comic artists who, under the guidance of Michael Ross from Germany and Akosua Hanson from Ghana, have woven together stories that challenge, celebrate, and contemplate. From the mythical to the heroic, the fantastical to the all-too-real, these comics engage with the legacies of colonial history and the enduring strength of ancestral ties, all while envisioning a world marked by harmonious and respectful coexistence.

As curator, my aim is to guide you through these narratives, inviting you to experience the diversity and depth of African comic art. This exhibition is not just a display; it's an invitation to dialogue, to discovery, and to a deeper understanding of the complexities and beauties of African societies and their creative expressions.

We invite you to immerse yourself in these stories, to see the world through the artists' eyes, and to join us in celebrating the power of African comic art to inspire, to decolonize, and to connect us all.

Derek Amoah, creative designer and curator of the AfriComics Exhibition 2024
