Culture

In exchange with the world. For diversity, understanding and trust.

The Goethe-Institut Hongkong promotes international cultural exchange. Our projects are created in partnership and close cooperation with cultural institutions, cultural initiatives, and artists from Hongkong, Germany, and worldwide. We invite an open, trusting dialog, joint artistic production, and the exchange of diverse perspectives.

FREE RADICALS - New expressions from an untethered generation

Bethany Man, Elizabeth Li and Aidan Ng are three Hong Kong artists who graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Fine Arts in 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively. This group exhibition is their effort to show how their generation prioritises agility when it comes to subject matters, materials and daily life in order to stay true to their artistic pursuits and what freedom means to them.

hin und her — Duo exhibition by HSU Wai Lun and SO Lai Ping

In German, “hin und her” is the motion of thought that cannot be concluded. In Chinese, “來來回回” describes something that cannot settle, cannot stop. Two languages arrive at the same place. Time no longer moves forward, it only swings, like a pendulum without a clock face.
We swing back and forth across Hong Kong’s different timelines: between the old and the new, traces of thought, and archival images, revisiting the condition of time in this city.

  • Collaborative Project

    Solitude: Loneliness & Freedom

What does it mean to be alone–by choice or by circumstance? This cross-cultural Goethe-Institut project brings together artists and curators from East and Central Asia and Germany who explore solitude through performances, exhibitions, and thought-provoking discussions. Discover new perspectives on one of the defining experiences of our time.

  • Open Call for Exhibition Proposals

2027 Goethe Gallery: Zeitgeist Hong Kong

We are looking for proposal that matches the spirit of "Zeitgeist"! The term "zeitgeist" reflects the social and political characteristics of a certain period of time and encompasses ideas and rituals, values, behaviour, (emotional) attitudes and sensitivities. Projects that artistically address current issues in Hong Kong and/ or global issues and that centre on collaborative learning in artistic practice, participation and active exchange are welcomed.

  • Projekt Ost- und Zentralasien

UNRULY MIRRORS - zwischen Haut und Haltung

“UNRULY MIRRORS” examines beauty salons in East and Central Asia as ambivalent spaces: as sites for the reproduction of normative ideals—and at the same time as spaces of possibility for intimacy and subversive resistance. The project asks: How can aesthetic practices be rethought as forms of self-determination?
Through an open call, we invite artists from all disciplines to apply with existing works or new project proposals.

Frankfurt, Here We Go!

First impression matters! Thanks to its international airport, Frankfurt is very often the first city people would set foot on when visiting Germany or Europe. Other than serving as the European hub for business and finance, what more can we expect from this city?

City of Dreams and Fears

The Goethe-Institut Hongkong and the French Consulate of Hong Kong are excited to partner with the School of Creative Media, the City University of Hong Kong for the project “City of Dreams and Fears”. This initiative explores games as a powerful medium to narrate and represent futuristic visions of cities, their urban spaces, icons, and histories through innovative game mechanics and world-building. The project is co-funded by the Franco-German Cultural Fund.
