This year’s “What Is Stage” series culminates with a 4-day artist seminar led by Jan Pappelbaum that offers twenty-five participants the unique opportunity to talk with him in-depth about the interconnection between aesthetics, text and visual representation in his work.

To ensure a rigorous level of discussion, seminar participants are required to attend at least six of the prior Screening and Discussion series on Pappelbaum’s work and artistic concepts. (Workshop participants are strongly encouraged to attend all screenings if possible. Due to copyright arrangements, no other screenings will be provided.)

Participants will be selected by West Kowloon and Edward Lam Dance Theatre.

Jan Pappelbaum was born in 1966 in Dresden, former East Germany. Between 1988 and 1993, after training as a bricklayer, he studied architecture at the Bauhaus University Weimar and at the Vienna University of Technology. In Weimar, parallel to his studies, he worked as a set designer for a Faust project, helping to create a separate temporary theater space for the performance, and making contact with young directing students from Berlin with whom he still collaborates today.
