Libraries are the most important protagonists for the promotion of reading skills and the promotion of media literacy. Main target groups for these activities are children. The paper will present different projects of German Public Libraries to foster reading skills and to enhance the interest in reading. Additionally, there will be examples how they foster the understanding of textual content and develop language skills of the target groups!

Barbara has served as the President of Bibliothek Information Deutschland, the national umbrella organization of German library and information associations, and she is currently an Executive Committee member of the German Library Association, DBV. She is a member of IFLA’s Governing Board and has held many leadership positions in the European Bureau for Libraries, Archives and Documentation Associations (EBLIDA), including Executive Committee member, Vice-President, and Chair of the Expert Group on Culture and Information Society. Currently, she is a member of the Action Group on e-books in libraries.
Barbara has been very active in library policy and development in support of various European Union projects. She has also been engaged in the activities of German national and European professional library organizations. In recent years, Barbara has been working for the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Goethe-Institut as an expert on library affairs.
Barbara holds university degrees in Slavonic studies, history and educational theory at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
