Metropolis, Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Good Bye, Lenin…… These are some of the Classic German films that you might have heard of. What you might not know is that the history of cinema in Germany can be traced back to 1895.
Over the years, German films have gone through its highs and lows, witnessing as well as documenting and reflecting many of its historical turbulence. The Library of Goethe-Institut Hongkong has a large collection of German films in DVD format. This collection covers silent films in the 1920s, films made in the East and West Germany, works by renowned German film directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders, to more recent productions.
