Never look away

After The Lives of Others, a strong film again which deals with German history - ‘Never Look Away’ was nominated for the Oscar this year. The director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck will be presenting his latest film in Hong Kong

Returning to the darker edge in The Lives of Others (2006), von Donnersmarck conceives another epic tale of art, love and politics spanning three tumultuous decades of German history. Building on contemporary painter Gerhard Richter, this historical drama focuses on a young artist who resists Soviet realism and eventually heads west to pursue a truer artistic path. A canny evocation of how the ponderous wheel of history keeps turning – yet the truth is beautiful, if you never look away.
