In homage to Ozu Yasujiro’s 1932 title I Was Born, But…, Angela Schanelec (The Dreamed Path, 41st) unveils a perplexing family drama distilled to a minimal narrative. Long, static shots quietly observe a professor whose life begins to fall apart after her teenage son vanishes and then reappears mysteriously. Inspired by the opacity of Bresson’s characters’ interior worlds, the camera creates space and time for the mother and child to reappraise their feelings and reform their disintegrating family. Best Director, Berlinale.
