Under the title ‘Critical Public in Germany and Hong Kong’, the second German-Hong Kong Alumni Talk organized by the Goethe-Institut and the German Alumni Association Hong Kong will take place on 28th May, 2019. The guests of the talk will be Armin Reinartz, the head of the Global Innovation Hub of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Hong Kong, and Dr. Peter Qiu, who is a TV commentator at Phoenix Satellite Television and guest professor of the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Our moderator is Timothy Wong, a graduate of the University of Hong Kong's German Program and is now working in the German Consulate General Hong Kong, responsible of press and cultural affairs. Alumni of German cultural and education organizations as well as all those interested are cordially invited to the expert discussion and to the subsequent open discussion.
At the beginning of the event, Armin Reinartz will give an overview of theFriedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom’s (FNF) global commitment to political education, covering in particular their activities in Hong Kong where he has led the Global Innovation Hub of FNF since November 2017. His interlocutor Dr. Peter Qiu, who studied and earned his doctoral degree in Germany, is an active TV journalist and teaches Globalization of Media and Communication at the HKBU. He will give an insight into the Hong Kong media landscape and its development as a result of social changes. In the talk both experts will discuss the current affairs in Germany and Hong Kong which arouse social awareness, and how citizens make themselves heard in the public sphere. Afterwards they will answer questions from the audience. We are pleased to invite our guests and participants to enjoy German food and beverages after the talk.
The German-Hong Kong Alumni Talk is a whole new event series, launched by the Goethe-Institut Hongkong and the German Alumni Association Hong Kong. Four times a year we will hold an expert discussion on current sociopolitical, economic, cultural or education topics at the Goethe-Library. The event is supported by the German Consulate General Hong Kong and the German Academic Exchange Service.

Prof. Dr. Peter Qiu
is a television commentator at Phoenix Satellite Television and directs three online radio programmes at Qingting FM. He also teaches as a visiting professor at the School of Communication and the School of Social Science at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and also at three leading universities in Shanghai.
Prof. Qiu studied his bachelor degree at the East China Normal University from 1980 to 1984, followed by a three-year master's degree at the Tongji University in Shanghai. From 1992 to 1997 he received scholarship from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and obtained his doctorate degree at the Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen in Germany.
From 1991 to 1997, Prof. Qiu worked as a correspondent for the Chinese Department of the foreign radio station of Deutsche Welle in Germany. After his promotion, he went to Hong Kong and worked as a correspondent for the newspaper Wen Wei Po for three years before becoming the head of the PR department at WellNet Holdings Limited from 2000-2002. Later on, he worked for two years as a correspondent for the China Editorial Department of Deutsche Welle in Hong Kong. Peter Qiu has been a television commentator at Phoenix TV since 2004. He had also hosted his weekly programs - "Peter Qiu's Talk" and the "Strategy Room", with over 200 million viewers worldwide, until 2017.
