About Archive of the People

Archive of the People (AOP) was an ongoing individual research and art project that addresses the governance on records and affiliated politics, and now evolves to an artist collective in 2016.

While social disruption arouses calls for democratising archive, under the risk of decaying in records and shadow of absolute political regime, Archive of the People puts the established value, dominated historical and political narrative into question; at first, AOP engages Archive on epistemological level - the nature of records in social domain and how “past” and “memory” are constituted with various archival materials; on the other hand, “People” suggests an anonymous or semi-anonymous crowd, who are essential contributors of history, social value and knowledge but somehow being overlooked. The collective takes on a broader perspective on archival practice, to conceive a framework that facilitates social discourse, through socio-political research and creative means to challenge the homogeneity in multiple aspects.

Members:

LEE KAI CHUNG
LEE Kai Chung performs research on historical events, political systems, and ideology. His work addresses the lack of proper governance over the records and pending legislation for Archives Law. Through research, social participation and engagement, Lee considers the individual gesture as a form of political and artistic transgression, which resonates with existing narratives of history.

Lee Kai Chung was awarded Master of Fine Arts from School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong in 2014. Lee received The Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts) of Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2017 from Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2018. Recent exhibitions and projects include “Seoul Mediacity Biennale 2018”, “12th Shanghai Biennale: Proregress – Art in an Age of Historical Ambivalence” and  “Artist Making Movement - Asian Art Biennial 2015”.

MICHELLE LEE HO WING

As an educator, she encompasses responsibility to inspire learners by incorporating autonomous, serendipity and intuition in art learning. She currently works as a content contributor and researcher for learning and interpretation in M+ Museum.

Michelle’s work is characterized by her interest in triangular relationship between author, reader and text. Her current research is related to the linkage among archive, library and the circulation of the looted library books.
