Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to be venue partner of Project21st in presenting the performance-based sound installation MADE IN LATERLAND in the Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio from July 5 to 13, 2023. MADE IN LATERLAND is one of the 4 out-of-the-box music events in the #musicismore series, which explores the nature of music as a happening, a phenomenon, a performing art that allows audiences to submerge in.

A collaboration between Hong Kong composer Charles Kwong and local artist Jacklam Ho, the performance-based sound installation will give damaged, imperfect and unfinished musical instruments a second life, a unique purpose that challenges the concept of what normality is.

Housed in the Goethe-Gallery as an installation exhibit, audiences may notice the past lives of the modified instruments, yet they are fulfilling a different function. While the revived instruments will form part of the sound installation through a synthesiser system as loudspeakers that playback records, Charles and Jacklam will also create new compositions with the specific "defects" of these instruments, to highlight the unique quality of their "imperfect" sounds.

The work examines the performability of records in a gallery setting while the musical aspect of the sound installation and the performance blurs the lines between live and recorded music, as well as acoustic and electronic sounds.
