In German we have a saying “Aller Anfang ist schwer“ meaning „every beginning is hard. We totally understand it’s hard to start learning something new, but we also cherish the beauty of German Literature and would like to share it with you in a comfortable and interesting way.

On two Saturdays, 8th and 15th March, our German teacher Eva Wiegandt will give participants an easy-breezy 45 minutes lecture on German Literature. Topics to be covered include famous and important autors of the 20th century.

After the talk there will be film screening. We have chosen two literature-related films for your enjoyment. Snacks and Tea are also prepared.

Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe

vor der Morgenröte_3

102 mins, with English Subtitles, 2016, Drama, Germany, France, Austria
Director: Maria Schrader
Starring: Josef Hader, Barbara Sukowa, Valerie Pachner
Story: It tells the story of the Austrian writer and his life in exile from 1936 to 1942. Zweig was one of the most famous writers of his time, but as a Jewish intellectual he struggled to find the right stance towards the events in Nazi Germany. Driven to emigrate to South America at the peak of his worldwide fame, Zweig fell into despair at the sight of Europe's downfall. This visually stunning and emotionally powerful film explores what it means to be a refugee, and exposes the difficult decision to speak out or remain silent in the face of tyranny.

Eva Wiegandt's sharing session: 14:00 - 14:45

Topic: Other important authors of the 20th century (e.g. Bertolt Brecht, Erich Fried, Hermann Hesse....)

Chosen Film:
Film Screening Time: 15:00 - 16:30
Rhymers and Rivals

Dichter und Kämpfer_01

89 mins, with English Subtitles, 2012, Documentary Film, Germany
Director: Marion Hütter
Story: Literature as a live act, poetry flung out to a large audience and word-acrobatics on demand. Director Marion Hütter follows four German poetry slammers over a year as they perform and rehearse, and also records their lives beyond their role as ‘rhymers and rivals’. Julius, Theresa, Sebastian and Philipp have different personalities; although they all do their own thing they share a common aim: to give their audiences an earful of something to think about. This documentary shows us what drives these four bards to give their all, night after night, for the delectation of the audience, and explores the way in which slam poetry has changed in recent years. When they began, these four were part of a small but intimate circle. Nowadays the slam scene is much broader, more diverse and competitive. All at once a sub-culture that was once dismissed now finds itself feted by mainstream culture.

About Eva Wiegandt:

My name is Eva Wiegandt. I have been living in Hong Kong for over 20 years and have felt very much at home here from day one because the city is more versatile than any other in the world: you can go hiking and swimming in a single day and still dine in an elegant restaurant or go out with friends in the evening.

Hong Kong people inspire me with their curiosity: they always want to try something new, whether it’s a new restaurant, a new destination or a new language. That’s really unique.

Reading has always been one of my biggest hobbies and I’m particularly happy when I can introduce Hong Kongers to German books or films – in other words, when I can bring a part of German culture to Asia.
