Movements and Moments
Comics

The Goethe-Institut’s project “Movements and Moments” shines a spotlight on Indigenous feminist movements from the Global South. Long overlooked in Western-centric feminist narratives and digital knowledge platforms such as Wikipedia, these stories are brought into focus through the medium of accessible and visually striking comics.

About the Project

Initiated by the Goethe-Institut Jakarta, “Movements and Moments – Feminist Generations” aims to draw greater public attention to feminist struggles and key figures from the Global South that are rarely documented. By using comics as a storytelling format, the project lowers barriers to access while foregrounding cultural perspectives and decolonial approaches.

From 218 submissions spanning 42 countries, 16 stories were selected, exploring issues ranging from environmental activism and educational equity to LGBTIQA+ rights. Participating artists received mentorship from internationally recognised figures in the global comics community.

The comics are published in several languages—including German, English, and the creators’ respective native languages—and are made available both online and through selected publishing houses.
