Conversations with African Writers

The Literary Crossroads Series brings together African writers on the continent and from the diaspora to discuss contemporary trends and themes in literature. In our February session we host two of Africa’s most promising award-winning authors – Ayobami Adebayo from Nigeria and Zukiswa Wanner who is based in Kenya. 

Ayobami is a Nigerian writer. Her stories have appeared in a number of magazines and anthologies, and one was highly commended in the 2009 Commonwealth Short Story Competition. She holds BA and MA degrees in Literature in English from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife and has worked as an editor for Saraba magazine since 2009. She also has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia where she was awarded an international bursary for creative writing. Ayobami has received fellowships and residencies from Ledig House, Sinthian Cultural Centre, Hedgebrook, Ox-bow School of Arts, Ebedi Hills and Siena Art Institute. She was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Her novel Stay With Me was shortlisted for the Baileys Women's Prise For Fiction 2017.

Zukiswa Wanner is an African journalist and novelist, born in Zambia and now based in Kenya. Since 2006, when she published her first book, her novels have been shortlisted for awards including the South African Literary Awards (SALA) and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. In 2015 she won the K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award for London Cape Town Joburg (2014).[1] In 2014 Wanner was named on the Africa39 list of 39 Sub-Saharan African writers aged under 40 with potential and talent to define trends in African literature.
