Women in Politics

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN VENUE: We are at Kenya National Theatre, Cheche Gallery.

The elections 2017 and the discussions that happened around them have showed that the public political discourse in Kenya is still very much focused on topics of corruption, ethnicity, and the scandalisation of politics.

The Goethe-Institut Kenya, in cooperation with Twaweza Communications, is presenting a series of panel discussions on policy issues that should be more in the public eye, while at the same time offering a comparative perspective, inviting panelists from Germany as well as Kenya. The Civil Society Dialogues will shed light on topics of interest that are at the core of the political debate in a working democracy and see how they are dealt with in both countries.

On 30 May 2018, we will revisit a topic that we had previously discussed in last year’s Election Dialogue Forum: Women in politics. In the aftermath of the 2017 elections, Kenya and Germany have taken very different trajectories in terms of the political representation of women. While women in Kenya are slowly starting to claim more political space as MPs, MCAs or Governors, in Germany we have witnessed a decline in parliamentary seats occupied by women. In fact, the rate of female MPs is currently at 31 percent, a 20 year low point for Germany. What factors led to this success or failure respectively for the both countries? And what are the lessons we can learn for the future of female representation in politics?
