Cinnamon Colomboscope: Re/Evolution (Former Colombo Terminus Railway Station: Maradana)

In September 2017, a group of extraordinary musicians from Germany, Switzerland and Sri Lanka will come together in Colombo to develop a new experimental concert collaboration. With the support of the Goethe-Institut and the Swiss Embassy, award winning European musicians Michael Schiefel and Philipp Schaufelberger are invited to Sri Lanka to create an experimental program together with outstanding Sri Lankan musicians, Sumudi Suraweera, Swara Sathiyanathan and Isaac Smith. In two concerts, in Jaffna and in Colombo at the multidisciplinary festival Cinnamon Colomboscope: Re/Evolution, the sounds found in this exciting exchange can be enjoyed.
The German jazz singer and professor for jazz singing, Michael Schiefel, also began experimenting with loop- and other electronic devices during his studies, so that his first solo album “Invisible Loop” became a great success. His career brought him to play at diverse festivals and events, especially with his band “jazzIndeed” which is widely recognized by critics and listeners alike.
Philipp Schaufelberger, Swiss jazz guitarist and composer, was active in multiple formations that played jazz and related music genres. Performing in many festivals in Europe and the USA, he also took part in many radio plays, demonstrating his flexibility and knowledge.
Being music ethnologist, Sumudi Suraweera’s research focuses on Sri Lankan low-country traditional drumming. His own ensemble include the Serendib Sextet and Baliphonics, which were formed from collaborative projects between musicians from New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Being the founder of Musicmatters, a lot of his energy is directed to the creative and alternative forms of music making.
Swara Sathiyanathan, hailing from a musical family is a virtuos carnatic musician who has mastered the classical double reed wind instrument characteristic to Jaffna and Sri Lanka’s north. He is a highly sought after musician both in temple and commercial settings.
Isaac Smith is a New Zealand-born sound artist, composer and improviser. Isaac resides in Sri Lanka and is the foreign tutor in residence and artistic coordinator at Musicmatters, a unique non-exam based music education centre with a focus on nurturing creativity through music education.
