Paula, a single mother, falls in love with the political functionary Paul. Paul isn’t happy with his private life either. He knows his wife is cheating on him. Paula wants her new happiness by any means. At first, Paul is fearful and hesitant, until he realises that he may have found the love of his life. 'The Legend of Paul and Paula' is an enchanting plea for the right to individual happiness, even in a socialist state. The film was a huge success in the GDR.
