Public Project at Karachi beach
Karachi Beach Radio

by Yaminay Chaudhri and Julia Tieke
Julia

KBR is centered around a recording and radio booth on the beach, using sound as a medium of inquiry to study the complex relationships between human/ non-human ecologies and Karachi’s rapidly developing coastline. It archives the encroachment of speculative land development at the expense of free and diverse public commons.

By Zoya Ahmed

KBR will create a collaborative 4 week residency (mid July - mid August, 2019) between artists, scholars, activists and the users of Karachi's public beaches; documenting the transforming beaches through storytelling, oral/acoustic genres, new formats and interventions in the vernacular.
KBR will be shared in the public domain via a website that not only archives the audio we collectively gather, but also writing from a number of contributors contextualizing and framing the transformation of Karachi’s waterfront within a longer and wider regional history. Audio will be shared via the Pakistani CityFM89 radio station and other local and international radios and audio platforms.
