Hailed as the first and only feature film about gay life ever produced in communist East Germany, Coming Out premiered on the night the Berlin Wall fell, November 9, 1989.
East Berlin, toward the end of the 1980s. Philipp (Freihof), a young teacher, begins a relationship with his colleague Tanja (Manzel). Although he has kept his real sexual orientation a secret for years, a renewed encounter with a former friend Jacob (Wandtke), who is gay, reminds Philipp of his repressed longing.
When Philipp meets Matthias (Kummer) and begins to fall in love with him, he begins to lead a double life: Tanja must learn nothing of Matthias, and Matthias must learn nothing of Tanja. But this cannot go on for long, and Philipp must finally come to terms with who he is.
Presented in honor of Prinde Month and in cooperation with the Wende Museum and the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
