1915: One night, Turkish soldiers arrest all Armenian men in the village of Mardin – including the young blacksmith Nazaret. He is separated from his family and deported to the desert. After years of forced labour, he can only escape death by chance – and with his vocal cords cut. Nazaret realises that he has lost everything: his home, his family, his voice. When he learns that his two daughters are still alive, he embarks on a desperate journey to find them. Their traces lead him all the way through the Syrian desert, over the Atlantic Ocean, to Cuba, and eventually to North America.

Fatih Akin - A movie director, scriptwriter, actor and producer born in Hamburg 1973. In his movies, he deals with themes like identity, culture and home. Fatih Akin became internationally known in 2004 with his movie “Head-on”, for which he won several prizes, including the Golden Bear. Since then he has been awarded numerous prizes, for example at the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the German Film Awards and the European Film Awards.
